To celebrate Malaysia’s 61st year of independence, MSO collaborated with MASCA for this year’s Merdeka Night event. There was an awesome turn-out showering attendees with multiple activities planned for the night which had begun with a speech from the Deputy High Commissioner of Malaysia in Canberra, Encik Fareed. Even prior to that Monday night, competition announcements via social media promoted early involvement. Registration for a talent competition was made available on Facebook and each live performance during the event wow-ed the crowd. An art competition was also posted up whereby the winner with the most votes was later announced. The creativity did not stop there. There was a large canvas of the Malaysian flag for event-goers to have their chance to paint in the blue, yellow, and red primary colours, and a photo booth was made available to collect memories of the night. For those who had really shown off their patriotism on this momentous date, one male and one female were awarded the ‘Best Dressed’ prize after donning beautiful traditional wear. Finally, the online Kahoot quiz heightened Merdeka Night’s participation as everyone logged onto their devices to fight for top place in friendly competition. With the variety of entertainment, plentiful foods, and ample company, the night turned out to be another successful associative event. Celebrating our Malaysian roots truly was the best time in Canberra to ‘bersatu padu’ – as they say – and celebrate our National Day!
